Senior Product Designer
Senior Product Designer to define the core experience of the Bluesky app, working across strategy, interaction, visual craft, and systems thinking.
What if social media worked more like the web — open, flexible, and full of possibility? That’s the future Bluesky is building. Our app is already used daily by millions, but it’s just the beginning: beneath it is a protocol designed to support an entire ecosystem of apps, all connected by the same social graph.
We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer to help define the core experience of the Bluesky app. This is a generalist role by necessity and by design: you’ll work across product strategy, interaction design, visual craft, and systems thinking on a product that already has real scale and cultural weight.
About the Role:
You’ll be part of the small team responsible for Bluesky’s flagship app — a multi-platform, open-source social app with influence over how people communicate online. The things you design will ship quickly, be widely seen, and shape the future of social media.
You’ll join our current Product Designer as a two-person design team with unusually high leverage. As our second designer, you’ll have significant ownership over both the product experience and the evolution of the Bluesky brand — helping set the patterns, standards, and design culture that others will build on.
This role is for someone who genuinely loves consumer products: someone who cares deeply about interaction details, has strong taste, and enjoys making complex systems feel simple. We’re a small, fast-moving team, which means fewer layers, more responsibility, and real influence over what we build and why.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own design projects end to end, from early ideation and exploration through execution, launch, and iteration post-release
- Partner closely with product and engineering to define problems, shape direction, and make thoughtful tradeoffs under real constraints
- Bring strong product judgment to decisions about scope, sequencing, and quality — including when not to ship something
- Design clear, intuitive interaction flows and interfaces that feel cohesive and intentional
- Learn continuously from users by reviewing real usage, feedback, and research, and using those insights to inform and improve the product
- Contribute to and evolve Bluesky’s visual language and design system as the product grows
- Sweat the details that matter: copy, states, hierarchy, accessibility, and interaction polish
- Help set the bar for design quality across the product by giving thoughtful critique and leading by example
You might be a good fit if you:
- Have at least 5 years of experience designing digital products, with a portfolio of shipped work
- Have strong visual design skills, including aesthetic judgment around layout, typography, and hierarchy
- Are fluent in interaction and UI design across iOS, Android, and web
- Bring a strong sense of user empathy, grounding your design work in real user needs and behaviors
- Are highly proficient with tools like Figma, including building and maintaining design systems
- Are comfortable creating interactive prototypes to explore, test, and communicate complex interactions
- Have owned projects end-to-end, from early ideas through launch and iteration
- Are comfortable collaborating closely with product and engineering partners
- Hold certainty lightly, take feedback well, and iterate quickly
We’re especially excited if you have the following:
Experience designing consumer social products or community-driven apps
Strong opinions about what makes social apps feel great, and the ability to articulate and defend those opinions
Experience contributing to or shaping product and brand identity
Comfortable delivering high-quality work quickly in a fast-moving environment
Experience running user research and turning insights into product improvements
You have a love-hate relationship with auto layout and enjoy pushing it to its absolute limits.
