Lead Civil Engineer

Lead Civil Engineer
The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by building an underground network of tunnels. Today, we’re developing technology to increase tunneling speed and reduce costs by an order of magnitude—unlocking rapid, scalable transit in dense urban environments.
We are seeking a Lead Civil Engineer (PE) to support our Las Vegas operations as a hands-on, technical individual contributor. This role owns civil engineering execution from concept through construction and works closely with field teams to deliver safe, buildable designs in a fast-paced environment. In this role you'd act as a mentor and inspiration to more junior people in the team, with the goal of moving into a team leader/management position in the mid-long term future.
Responsibilities:
- Own and execute all civil engineering scope for Las Vegas projects, including site development, permitting support, surveying coordination, utilities, grading, and drainage.
- Serve as a hands-on technical lead responsible for end-to-end civil deliverables—from site investigation and design through construction support and closeout.
- Act as Engineer of Record, reviewing and stamping civil design packages.
- Coordinate closely with survey, utility locating, tunneling, and construction teams to ensure safe underground work and prevent utility conflicts.
- Develop and maintain civil design standards, QA/QC processes, and best practices.
- Collaborate daily with construction, mechanical, electrical, and tunneling teams to resolve field issues and keep projects moving.
- Interface with local jurisdictions, permitting agencies, consultants, and contractors to support approvals and compliance.
- Provide technical guidance and informal mentorship to engineers and designers without direct people management responsibility.
- Support cross-site coordination with other Boring Company locations and contribute to company-wide standardization efforts.
Basic Qualifications

- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license – required (Nevada preferred; other states acceptable with ability to obtain NV PE).
- 10+ years of progressive civil engineering experience across design and field execution.
- Strong background in site development, grading, drainage, utilities, and surveying coordination.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and civil design workflows.
- Deep understanding of grading, drainage, utilities and land development principles.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- PE Licenses in additional states.
- Experience with subsurface, tunneling, or infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated ability to manage high-stakes, fast-moving projects with multiple stakeholders.
- Excellent communication and technical judgment.
- Hands-on approach and ability to transition seamlessly between field and office work.
