Senior Mechanical Engineer - Thermal Systems
Senior Mechanical Engineer with 5+ years of experience in thermal systems to develop innovative products from concept through production.
Eight Sleep is the world’s first sleep fitness company.
With our flagship product, the Pod, we are addressing critical sleep issues such as temperature regulation, bed elevation, snoring reduction, and the wake-up experience.
We’re looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer with a strong focus on thermal systems to help develop innovative products from concept through to production. You'll take ownership of the thermal performance of our systems including the thermal engine in the Pod Hub and the thermal core of the Pod Cover. You'll design mechanical components and work cross functionally with our engineering and product teams. You’ll be part of a small, mission-driven team and have significant ownership over decisions.
The position is based out of our San Francisco office and requires ~20% travel to China to support manufacturing activities.
How you’ll contribute
Own thermal subsystems by developing and optimizing active thermal regulation systems using custom TECs, heatsinks, fabrics, and other thermal regulation strategies
Architect and design products by driving mechanical system architecture through ideation, CAD, rapid prototyping, and iteration, factoring in manufacturing, cost, and reliability, and collaborating with cross-functional teams for seamless subsystem integration.
Perform thermal and fluid analyses using simulation tools, validate designs with lab testing (e.g. - temp sensors, thermal cameras) and DOEs, then correlate data to real-world performance to refine solutions and conduct root-cause analyses.
Partner with suppliers in Asia to drive design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA), oversee build processes, troubleshoot manufacturing challenges, and implement continuous improvements during pilot builds and production ramps.
Contribute beyond thermal aspects by supporting general mechanical design (plastic enclosures, metal stamping, soft goods integration)
What you need to succeed
5+ years of experience in mechanical design and thermal management (e.g., TECs, heatsinks, heat pipes, insulation strategies, thermally conductive fabrics).
Experience shipping high-volume consumer products, including manufacturing support in Asia.
Highly proficient in CAD (e.g. Solidworks, NX, Creo), DFM/DFA, and GD&T.
Strong understanding of heat transfer fundamentals, thermal instrumentation, DOEs, and root cause analysis techniques.
Highly proficient in data analysis techniques (e.g. - Python, Matlab)
BSME or equivalent (MS preferred)
Willingness and ability to travel to China as needed
