Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Consumer - Retail Cash)
The Consumer Retail Cash team provides the core cash layer for the Coinbase retail experience. We power how users fund, hold, deposit and withdraw cash, and how that cash flows into the rest of Coinbase — trading, rewards, advanced products, and more. You will be part of the vision to build a compelling and trusted single cash balance that serves Everything Exchange users’ risk‑off needs.
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll design and build the distributed systems behind Retail Cash, ensuring cash is accurate, available, and reliable at scale. You’ll work on low‑latency, high‑throughput services that must be correct and auditable in a real‑time financial environment.What you'll be doing:
- Build new services to meet critical product and business needs using Golang.
- Design scalable systems to solve novel problems with modern cloud technology and industry best practices.
- Articulate a long term vision for maintaining and scaling our backend systems and the teams running them.
- Work with engineers, designers, product managers and senior leadership to turn our product and technical vision into a tangible roadmap every quarter.
- Write high quality, well tested code to meet the needs of your customers.
What we look for in you:
- You have at least 5 years of experience in software engineering.
- You’ve designed, built, scaled and maintained production services, and know how to compose a service oriented architecture.

- Demonstrates the ability to responsibly use generative AI tools and copilots (e.g., LibreChat, Gemini, Glean) in daily workflows, continuously learn as tools evolve, and apply human‑in‑the‑loop practices to deliver business‑ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in efficiency, cost, and quality.
Nice to haves:
- You have gone through a rapid growth in your company (from startup to mid-size).
- Experience with growth experiments or A/B testing frameworks.
- You have experience with Blockchain technology (such as Bitcoin, Ethereum etc..)
- You have experience decomposing a large monolith into microservices.
- You’ve worked with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Rails, Postgres, MongoDB or DynamoDB.
- You’ve built financial, high reliability or security systems.
- Crypto-forward experience, including familiarity with onchain activity such as interacting with Ethereum addresses, using ENS, and engaging with dApps or blockchain-based services.
